The small town of Riace in Calabria is becoming a global village. They're experiencing a rebirth of sorts since it has now become home to many refugees seeking asylum and peace in Europe.(Riace has hosted more than 6,000 aslyum seekers.) Riace, the same town where the famed Riace bronze statues were rediscovered in 1972 is highlighting its town even more by embracing migrants by housing them in the town's abandoned apartment buildings and providing opportunities to pursue a life of peace and also on their own terms. Most migrants stay in Riace but some leave after their assimilation into Europe for more opportunities. Domenico Lucano, Riace's Mayor, was included on a recent list of the top 50 World's Greatest Leaders by Fortune Magazine.

Calabria, a region whose experienced so many expansionist conquerers for centuries, is now embracing, without suspicion, poor migrants who've been abandoned by their own homeland as a place of safe refuge with a chance to start life over. How times have changed.

Bravo Domenico Lucano!
